“Shut up and hold still,” Arnie grumbled to Jon. “I’m almost finished.”
“Just tie the damn thing and back up. Your cologne is killing me,” he snarled while Mr. Bumble Fingers adjusted the tuxedo bow tie Jon had no hope of mastering.
“There.” Arnie huffed. “All done.”
Jon peered into the mirror and flinched at his refection. This was his first time in a formal tuxedo, and he wasn’t sure what to expect. He didn’t look half bad!
“What’s happening with this pocket thing?”
Arnie snatched the white handkerchief away. “No pocket square. Not necessary. Classic is the way to go. The wedding is about the bride, not what the men are wearing.”
“Do I really need to buy one of these things? Can’t I just rent a tux?”
“Sure”—the socialite shithead sniggered—“but do you want your balls where some other guy’s balls have been? Live a little, dude. There’s more to life than old jeans and ugly shirts.”
In the span of sixty-eight minutes, Jon took advantage of the Brooks Brothers excursion and bought two suits and a tuxedo at Arnie’s urging. Plus a dozen shirts, a couple of ties, some underwear, a pair of shoes, cuff links, a sweater, and a decent wallet. Apparently, the cheap Target brand money holder he carried wasn’t classy enough.
Him. Jon Weston. Classy?
“You need a watch, too. Not that GI Joe shit crap you got at a base commissary when you were twenty-five.”
“I like this watch,” Jon grumbled. “What’s wrong with it?”
“It’s a hunk of junk.” Arnie showed him his watch. “See this? It’s Versace. A bit too flashy for you. I’d suggest a nice classic Ferragamo.”
Two grand later, he was sporting a fancy black and gold watch.
After lightening his bank account, they stopped to eat at a place best described as nouveau tacky. The booths had a distinct 1950’s diner feel, and all the dishware was mismatched china and repurposed silverware. The décor might be questionable, but the meal they had took top honors.
Jon was busy making mental plans to show Lorelai the place when Arnie suddenly stood, and muttered, “I gotta go.” He waved his phone around. “Have a situation.” He reached into his billfold and handed off a hundred-dollar bill. “You’re a cheap date, Weston.”
Standing by the table, he continued shoveling food into his mouth. Jon found his behavior odd, but with Arnie, it was hard to tell what was smoke and mirrors and what was real.
Chewing through a goodbye, he stopped at the moment he was about to walk away, and said, “Tomorrow’s the pig roast, right?”
“Families and the faint-hearted until six, and then the good times start to roll.”
“Awesome.” He either looked perplexed or embarrassed. “Aren’t you going to ask why I’m ditching you?”
Shrugging, Jon made a face to demonstrate how little concerned he was by Arnie running off. “Nah.”
After looking at each other for a moment, Arnie shook his head and muttered about what a stone-cold asshole Jon was and then stomped off. He didn’t react. There was no reason to. Ever since he got back and started spending time at work, it was apparent something was up with the guy.
